2026 表裏 Beneath the surface

「不要被外表騙了，所謂的現實經常只有一個。」——村上春樹《1Q84》

俗話說「眼見為憑」，然而我們所看到的表象是否等同真實？ 而若表象僅是一層偽裝，又該如何切穿這層障蔽，穿透到更裏層的真實？ 我們經常用「表裏不一」來形容一個人外在言行和內在思想上的不一致；而在中醫理論中，則以「表裏」的概念論述了疾病的外在表徵、與內部實況間的差距，而有外熱內寒、外寒內熱等寒熱真假的落差。 在《莊子 · 齊物論》中亦提到「非彼無我，非我無所取，是亦近矣，而不知其所為使」，叩問了在看似堅實的自我表象之下，真正的主宰究竟為何？

「表裏」一展提議以表裏互相參照的形式，將人體視為一個軀殼，進行切割、打開、分解等動作，藉此重新觀看自我這個存有，外在形象與內在本質間的落差，並藉此引出蟄伏於表象之下、騷動不安的意識實相。 岩礦自男人側臉穿破而出，而他以僅存的左眼，《不可抗力》地凝視著眼前的裂解與質變。 少女的臉龐向兩側開啟，謎樣的植物從中緩緩升起，《綻》成一片生意盎然。 打開的人體軀殼中，狼人悄然睜開雙眼，《醒》藉由破殼而出的獸人，思索社會化與野性的自我之間，是否有進一步整合的可能。

展出作品共同以不同形式切穿自我的表象，邀請觀者以中醫表裏辨證的思維，向內觀看、挖掘自我意想不到的有趣面向。 本次展出亦同步發表畫冊《表裏》，收錄陳彥伯2017-2025年間的精選作品，完整呈現從鉛筆到水墨系列的創作脈絡。

As the saying goes, "Seeing is believing." However, does what we see on the surface truly equate to reality? If appearances are merely a layer of disguise, how can we cut through this barrier and penetrate to the deeper truth? We often use the word "two-faced" to describe a person who acts one way in public and another in private. In traditional Chinese medicine theory, the concept of "exterior and interior" also discusses the gap between the external manifestations of a disease and its internal condition.

The exhibition "Beneath the Surface" invites viewers to consider the human body as a shell, employing actions such as cutting, opening, and dissecting to re-examine the nature of the self, the gap between external image and inner essence, and thereby reveal the restless consciousness lurking beneath the surface.

In Force Majeure, rock bursts forth from a man’s head, and he irresistibly gazes at the fragmentation and transformation with his remaining left eye. A young girl's face unfolds on both sides, as mysterious plants slowly rise and bloom with vitality. Inside the opened human shell, a werewolf quietly opens its eyes. Wake contemplates whether there is a possibility of further integration between the socialized self and the inner wildness.

The exhibited works all cut through the self’s exterior in different forms, inviting viewers to look inward and explore unexpected and intriguing aspects of the self. This exhibition also marks the simultaneous launch of the art book "Beneath the Surface." It features a selection of Yen-Po Chen's works from 2017 to 2025, which fully present the creative evolution from pencil to ink series.
