STRAW DOG HOLIDAY

“The universe shows no favoritism. All thingsare treated as straw dogs.” — Dao De Jing by Laozi

In Daoist philosophy, the universe holds no personal affection for all living things. The term “straw dogs” implies how humans are toyed with by fate—like straw dogs used in rituals, carefully honored before the ceremony but discarded afterward without care. When facing impermanence, are humans merely passive and powerless beings? Is it possible to take a more proactive approach to confront the uncontrollable forces of external circumstances?

The exhibition Straw Dog Holiday proposes adopting a “vacation” mindset to face one’s own “straw dog state.” Since the external world is ever-changing and unpredictable, why not move through it with the ease and lightness of a holiday—finding contentment wherever you go?

Slices of tenderloin are picked up; the man in Sashimi leisurely lies on a flamingo float, enjoying the sultry summer vibe. Nearby, a man sunbathes on the beach, a flame ignited between his legs. Let’s place skewers on it and enjoy a beach BBQ. A man walking his dog bends down to hug his beloved pet, and squeeze out golden ooze. Through absurd imagery, Sacrificial Dog explores the manipulative relationship between the individual and fate. From a broken body, majestic antlers rise up; Exile dialectically reflects on destruction and rebirth as two sides of the same coin.

Welcome to join this straw-dog holiday—moving with holiday-like ease through the uncontrollable forces that shape a life.
